Basic Terms of Roofing
Square: A term for a 10ft. x 10ft. section
Decking: The substrate of plywood under the shingles
Ice & Water Barrier: A sticky membrane placed under the shingles to prevent water and ice infiltration.
Underlayment: A synthetic of asphalt based release barrier placed under the shingles in areas that ice and water is not used.
Ridgevent: A device placed on the peak of the roof to allow for air flow out of the attic space
Dripedge: The metal flashing installed around the perimeter of the roof to aid in water management
Step-Flashing: Bent metal installed between each shingle against sidewalls, chimneys or other walls
Valley: The angled area where 2 roof planes meet.
